After capturing the 2023 NBA MVP award, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has faced a grueling stretch of three consecutive seasons marred by injuries. In a candid conversation with The Athletic's David Aldridge, Embiid discussed the psychological strain those years imposed on him and expressed his determination to approach the 2026-27 campaign with a more positive outlook.
"I went through a period the last few years, obviously, I've come down with injuries," Embiid recalled. "I just hated coming into the gym. Like, injuries, I can't play, this and that. I was miserable, and depressed." He continued, "I just thought that's the biggest thing we need—that, not necessarily joyful personality, but something else. And I'm a grown man. A lot of it is on me to fight through it. But then again, it's also nice when you have other people around you that felt that way and can boost you up a little bit."
Embiid's on-court performance in the season opener offered a glimpse of his resilience: he recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 106-100 victory over the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.
With the offseason additions of seasoned champions such as LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Embiid appears more open to leaning on his teammates as he chases his ultimate goal of an NBA title. "I think the biggest thing that someone like 'Bron adds, other than being LeBron James, is just championship mentality," Embiid said. "I feel like I know what it takes to win, but I haven't done it. I'm looking for guidance on, like, what am I doing wrong? I want to learn a little bit more. Like, I feel like I know a lot, but then again, I'm still willing to learn. All these years, I haven't really had that championship mentality around me. So it's like, what can I do better?"
Embiid and the Sixers will return to action on Thursday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Key Analysis
Embiid's transparency about his mental health struggles highlights the often-overlooked emotional toll of professional sports, particularly for athletes enduring repeated injuries. His willingness to seek guidance from proven winners like James suggests a shift in leadership dynamics and a recognition that collective experience can accelerate his pursuit of a championship. As the Sixers integrate new veteran talent, Embiid's adjusted mindset could prove as pivotal as his physical recovery.
