Jerry Jones has firmly rejected any suggestion that Brian Schottenheimer's position as head coach is in jeopardy. The Dallas Cowboys owner made it clear that a mid-season firing is not under consideration, even after his team squandered a 14-0 lead at home and fell 33-30 in overtime to the Arizona Cardinals, dropping their record to 3-5.
When asked directly about a potential coaching change, Jones responded, "Again we're not going to get into anything, that's not in my mind at this time." He stressed that the blame should be spread across the entire organization, calling the situation "an indictment of the whole show" and "a criticism of everyone."
Jones also referenced the one time he made an in-season coaching change, when he fired Wade Phillips in 2010 after a 1-7 start and promoted Jason Garrett. "I'm not proud of it, but I made a change with Wade Phillips there in the middle of the season," Jones said, via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "I don't see that here at all." That move remains the only mid-season coaching change of his ownership, which helps explain his reluctance to repeat it with a team at 3-5 rather than 1-7.
Jones further defended Schottenheimer by pointing to the players' role in the loss. "I will say that a lot of people let Brian down today," he added. The Cowboys' collapse was indeed brutal: Arizona quarterback Gardner Minshew came off the bench with 1:35 left in the third quarter and led the Cardinals to touchdowns on four consecutive drives. Michael Wilson's 13-yard catch tied the game with six seconds remaining, and after Chad Ryland missed the extra point, he redeemed himself with a 42-yard field goal in overtime.
Arizona dominated the stat sheet, outgaining Dallas 467-261 and rushing for 202 yards, with Tyler Allgeier gaining 147 yards on just 11 carries. Schottenheimer now holds a 10-14-1 record since taking over in 2025, and the Cowboys have not won back-to-back games since November. With the trade deadline approaching and the NFC standings looking bleak, pressure will only mount if Dallas continues to lose in such fashion. Next up are the 2-6 Indianapolis Colts, and all eyes will be on whether Jones' patience can withstand another performance like the one against Arizona.
