Jarren Duran Trade Buzz: Padres Emerge as Frontrunners for Red Sox Outfielder

Trade rumors surrounding Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran are nothing new, and they've resurfaced early this offseason—even before the 2026 World Series has concluded. During a Bleacher Report livestream earlier this week, Jon Heyman of the New York Post discussed various league rumors and was asked specifically about Duran's future. Heyman indicated that if Duran is traded this winter, the San Diego Padres are the "probably" destination, adding that they "love" the 30-year-old.

"Duran has been sort of on the block without getting traded for years," Heyman said. "If he's going anywhere, it's probably the Padres. We know that the Padres love him, for whatever reason."

Duran is no stranger to Padres rumors. In 2025, Boston reportedly turned down a significant offer from San Diego for the outfielder. According to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, the Padres proposed a package centered around pitcher Dylan Cease—who was set to hit free agency after that season—and catching prospect Ethan Salas. The rejection was surprising, especially since it meant passing on the chance to acquire Salas, who was just 20 years old and had made his major league debut that season.

Duran, a one-time All-Star and All-Star Game MVP, posted an impressive 9.0 WAR in 2024. However, two years later, his value plummeted to 0.4 WAR in 2026. As a result, his trade value this winter is far lower than it once was, though that doesn't mean Boston can't find a partner. The Padres remain interested, but the Red Sox won't receive an offer comparable to the one they declined before.

This winter, Duran stands out as the most intriguing trade candidate on Boston's roster. If the Red Sox move him, they still have a solid outfield core in Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu, with Eli White as a viable fourth outfielder. While Duran didn't have the season he hoped for, Red Sox fans should stay alert—there's still a chance he could be dealt in the coming months.

Key Analysis

Duran's steep decline in production from 2024 to 2026 has significantly altered his trade market. The Padres' continued interest suggests they may believe a change of scenery could help him rediscover his All-Star form. However, Boston's decision to reject a package featuring Cease and Salas in 2025 looks increasingly costly given Duran's diminished value. With a crowded outfield and younger options emerging, the Red Sox may be motivated to move Duran, but they'll have to temper expectations for the return.
