Jalen Brunson is no stranger to performing under the bright lights of New York City, but the Knicks point guard admitted that hosting Saturday Night Live this offseason brought a different kind of pressure. During an appearance on the Roommates Show, Brunson described the experience as 'fantastic' and 'a lot of fun,' though he confessed to feeling anxious in the days leading up to the broadcast.
"I was really nervous leading up to it the entire week," Brunson said. "Each day I got less and less nervous and then Saturday I was anxious for it to start. But it was so much fun. The whole week. The whole cast, the staff made everything easy. Lorne Michaels was great, getting to know him."
The preparation was intense. Brunson spent nearly 12 hours at the studio on the Tuesday before the show, followed by almost 10 hours on Wednesday, six hours on Thursday, and a marathon day on Friday from 7:15 a.m. to midnight. On Saturday, he arrived at 12:30 p.m. and stayed until after the show ended at 1 a.m.
Among the various skits, Brunson singled out one in particular as his favorite: a spoof of High School Musical in which he and the cast incorporated basketball. That the skit allowed him to showcase his on-court skills certainly didn't hurt. He also expressed admiration for the cast's ability to adapt when material gets cut in real time, noting, "you'd be surprised at how much gets cut."
Key Analysis
Brunson's ability to handle last-minute changes on live television mirrors his composure on the basketball court, where he frequently navigates high-pressure situations. His successful SNL stint further cements his status as a rising star in New York sports and entertainment.
Looking ahead, Brunson and the Knicks will open the season on Oct. 20 against LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. The game will also feature the raising of last season's championship banner, and Brunson is expected to receive a thunderous ovation from the home crowd. Many of those fans likely watched his SNL appearance, which stood out as one of the highlights of his offseason.
