The New York Islanders took a conservative approach to free agency this summer, holding back with an eye on their substantial salary cap flexibility next year. Yet, one move they did make has been met with approval from observers.
Early in the free agency period, the Islanders inked forward Matias Maccelli to a one-year contract worth $2.25 million. The signing was well-received, and for solid reasons.
Maccelli, who turns 26 in October, has the potential to play his way into the team's long-term plans. He has delivered productive seasons in the past and ranks among the most accomplished players from the 2019 NHL Draft class. Now, he aims to rediscover that earlier form with a fresh start in New York.
This marks an entirely new chapter for Maccelli, who had no previous ties to the Islanders—neither with management, coaching staff, nor players. Despite that, he felt New York was the ideal fit, a feeling reinforced by the welcoming reception he received.
"A bunch of guys reached out and welcomed me to the team and told me if I have any questions or anything, I can always call or text them," Maccelli told NHL.com's Cory Wright. "I felt really welcomed."
Although he has yet to meet Islanders personnel in person, that will change in the near future. By mid-August, he is expected to be in the United States, searching for housing and getting acquainted with Long Island. For now, he remains in Finland, training at his home in Turku alongside fellow NHLers Mikko Rantanen of the Dallas Stars and Kaapo Kakko of the Seattle Kraken.
Maccelli is working hard to arrive at training camp in peak condition, ready to find his role under a new coaching staff. "It will be brand new," he said. "It's exciting times."
Key Analysis
The Islanders are hopeful that Maccelli's playmaking skills will energize their offense, particularly on the power play. New York struggled on special teams last season, and new head coach Peter DeBoer is expected to address that issue. Maccelli, who recorded 25 assists last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and has 118 career assists, will aim to set up his new teammates effectively.
