Islanders' Blowout Win Over Devils Hints at Potential to Surpass Low Expectations

Though the New York Islanders have only suited up for two games this season, their home opener offered a glimpse of what could be in store. While a single game doesn't define a season, it may be a sign of things to come.

With the campaign still in its infancy, plenty of uncertainty surrounds the Islanders' potential. The team surely aims to compete for a playoff spot, yet they didn't make significant upgrades. This year appears to be one of patience, as the club waits for burdensome contracts to expire, positioning themselves for an aggressive push next offseason while hoping their young talent develops.

However, this is a group that surpassed expectations last year thanks to the emergence of Matthew Schaefer, and perhaps they can replicate that feat this season.

Isles Can Exceed Expectations

Due to a relatively quiet offseason, expectations for the Islanders were modest heading into the year. Some forecasts pegged them as one of the weakest teams in the Eastern Conference, which would represent a steep decline from last season.

Yet in their second outing, New York dismantled a Devils squad considered a playoff contender by a 6-0 margin. After managing just one goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the offense erupted in game two.

Numerous key players contributed, and the special teams excelled with both a power-play goal and a short-handed goal. Furthermore, while Schaefer enjoyed his breakout campaign last year, the team hopes Victor Eklund can have a similar impact this season. The former first-round pick cracked the roster out of training camp, and on his 20th birthday, he scored his first NHL goal and added an assist.

In the broader picture of exceeding expectations, a major factor is their goaltender. Ilya Sorokin was the Vezina Trophy runner-up last year, and he's off to a strong start this campaign. Although the score against the Devils was lopsided, a key reason was Sorokin stopping all 37 shots he faced.

Overall, even though it's early, the performance against the Devils provides reason to believe the Islanders can surpass expectations this year.
