The New York Islanders have opted for a quiet approach to their offseason roster overhaul, bringing in just a pair of players who could realistically crack the opening night lineup: forward Matias Maccelli and netminder Vitek Vanecek.
Vanecek was acquired as a safety net for Semyon Varlamov, who may not be ready to serve as the backup to Ilya Sorokin. If Varlamov proves healthy enough for that role, Vanecek is expected to be placed on waivers.
However, Maccelli's trajectory with the Islanders is far more promising. The team envisions him potentially slotting into a top-six wing position, depending on how training camp unfolds. His skill set is precisely what New York needs to enhance their offensive production.

While his production dipped to 57 points over the following two seasons, the Islanders remain confident in his potential. Darche highlighted that Maccelli brings offensive skill that will benefit the top lines and the power play, an area where New York struggled significantly last season.
