Is Greg Schiano ready to name Rutgers football's starting quarterback?

CHICAGO As Rutgers football prepares for the start of training camp , the big question remains.

Who will be the Scarlet Knights starting quarterback? Well, the answer also remains unclear.

Greg Schiano said at Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday, July 28 that Dylan Lonergan and AJ Surace will continue the battle that began in spring practices once camp opens next week.

He's optimistic about the room overall.

Im very comfortable with the fact they both did very well this spring, Schiano told the USA TODAY Network-New Jersey.

Sean Ashenfelders much improved.

So we have a very healthy quarterback room, but we need to come to a conclusion who our starters going to be.

Thatll play out in camp.

Im hugely confident one of them will make it clear.

Im hugely confident the other one will be prepared if needed.

Rutgers brought Lonergan, who started his career at Alabama as a Nick Saban recruit, in from Boston College to bolster the QB room.

Regardless of who wins the job, Lonergan will provide the type of experience that Surace and Ashenfelder lack.

Surace, entering his third year with the program, spent the last two seasons learning from Athan Kaliakmanis, who was drafted by the Washington Commanders in the seventh round.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Surace has drawn strong reviews for his preparedness, strong arm and accuracy.

He said in the spring that he embraced the competition with Lonergan.

We have some real quality at the position in our program, Schiano said.

Just have to figure out who that starter will be.

While Schiano has said repeatedly he and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca wont rush a decision, he also would prefer not to have the competition go too long.

Were not going to take forever, either, Schiano said.

We have camp set up in a way that will allow us to do that.
