The Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball program heads into the 2026-27 campaign with a roster that boasts both talent and depth, and the backcourt appears to be the team's primary strength. The return of Tamin Lipsey for a fifth season—at least for the time being—significantly elevates the squad's floor and ceiling. Lipsey's presence will also help compensate for the absence of Killyan Toure, a standout sophomore who underwent shoulder surgery over the summer and is projected to be out until mid-January.
Toure's injury represents a considerable blow to the Cyclones' rotation, as he is expected to miss nearly half the season. Nevertheless, his potential continues to command national attention. Despite the lengthy layoff, Toure was still included on the Jerry West Award Preseason Watch List, an honor that underscores the high regard in which he is held.
Watch List Recognition
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame selected 20 shooting guards for the watch list, and Toure is among them. Now in its 13th year, the Jerry West Award is presented annually to the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I men's basketball. Last season's recipient was Keaton Wagler of Illinois, a freshman who was later chosen with the No. 5 pick by the LA Clippers in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Competition for the award will be fierce once again. Toure will face an uphill battle to remain on the list while sidelined, but his inclusion despite the injury speaks volumes about his reputation. He is one of four Big 12 players on the watch list, joining Collin Chandler of BYU, Caleb Holt of Arizona, and Finley Bizjack of West Virginia.
Freshman Impact
While it is unfortunate that Toure will begin the season on the sidelines, his place on the watch list is a testament to his freshman performance. He started all 37 games he played, earning the trust of head coach T.J. Otzelberger during summer workouts and training camp to secure a backcourt spot alongside Lipsey. As the season progressed, Toure's confidence grew, particularly on the offensive end. He closed his freshman year on a strong note, averaging 14 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.3 steals in 30.5 minutes per game over the final four contests.
With an expanded role in his sophomore season, Toure's production is expected to take another step forward once he returns to action.
