Illinois Basketball Embraces High Hopes with Revamped Roster

Illinois is preparing for another campaign with significant expectations, following a historic Final Four appearance last season. Head coach Brad Underwood expressed the team's mindset on Big Ten Network, stating, "We have to stay hungry." The Fighting Illini are determined to compete for a national title this year.

Despite losing key players Kylan Boswell and Keaton Wagler to the NBA Draft, Illinois managed to retain David Mirkovic and Andrej Stojakovic. The team also added Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks to bolster the backcourt. With the addition of five-star freshman Quentin Coleman, the Illini appear poised to make another deep run.

Underwood acknowledged the weight of expectations, saying, "We live with the expectation; we want that. We need to deal with that, the good, the bad, and accept that's where we're at." The team is already garnering preseason recognition: both Mirkovic and Stojakovic were named to the preseason All-Big Ten team, and ESPN's Jeff Borzello and CBS Sports' Gary Parrish both rank Illinois at No. 3 in their preseason top 25 rankings.

The roster seems equipped to handle the challenge, with Vaaks and Coleman anchoring the backcourt and Mirkovic, Stojakovic, and Tomislav Ivisic leading the frontcourt. Veterans Jake Davis and Zvonimir Ivisic provide depth off the bench, adding experience to an already seasoned squad.

However, while the expectations remain high, the team has undergone changes. Underwood noted, "(We) understand what we did last year was a great thing, but Keaton's not walking through the door. This is a new team. Ben Humrichous is not walking through the door; Kylan's not walking through the door." The loss of key contributors is felt, but Underwood is focused on the future.

He stressed the importance of daily improvement and trusting the process. "Pushing those buttons and pushing these guys to figure out what those processes are that allow us to become better," Underwood said. He also reminded the team of last season's setbacks, including nine losses and an 0-4 record in overtime, to learn from them and grow.

With the season tip-off less than a month away, Illinois appears ready to face the high expectations. Underwood wants the team to stay hungry while understanding their identity. "We also have to understand that we're going to be hunted," he said. "Let's carry a little swagger with us about that."

Key Analysis

Illinois faces the challenge of maintaining success amid roster turnover. The retention of Mirkovic and Stojakovic, coupled with the addition of Vaaks and Coleman, suggests the team has the talent to contend. However, the departure of Boswell and Wagler leaves voids that must be filled. Underwood's emphasis on process and learning from past mistakes will be crucial in navigating the demanding Big Ten conference and living up to the preseason hype.
