Hurricanes names engraved on Stanley Cup. Why is Tom Dundon’s family included?

The Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup-winning team has been engraved on the trophy, the team unveiled Wednesday.

The Canes opted to include 53 ownership, management, coaching staff and players names on the Cup, just shy of the maximum allowed 55 names.

Owner Tom Dundons wife, Veruschka Dundon, along with their five kids, fill the first two lines of names as they are all engraved on the trophy.

The familys inclusion drew mixed reactions on social media, but including the ownership familys names on the Cup has recently become tolerated in the league; in 2024 and 2025, Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola included his wife, Teresa, and their three sons.

Back in 1984, when Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington had his fathers name added to the Cup, once the NHL found out his dad had no involvement in the team, they covered the name with xs.

In the Canes section of the Cup, several front-office members and team staff follow ownership names before the list of 24 players.

Captain Jordan Staal was the first player carved on the Cup before the other players names appeared in alphabetical order.

According to the NHL, any player who featured in at least 41 regular-season games or a Stanley Cup Final game with the winning team is eligible to be engraved on the trophy.

If extenuating circumstances prevented a player from being selected, a 1994 stipulation also permitted those players to be added to the Cup.

The only player on the Cup who didnt meet those requirements was Nicolas Deslauries, who only featured in seven regular-season games for the Canes and did not appear in any Cup games despite being rostered.
