In a dramatic turn of events at TDECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the No. 20 Houston Cougars rallied from a 17-0 third-quarter deficit to defeat the UCF Knights 27-17. The Cougars unleashed 27 consecutive points to secure the comeback victory, improving their season record to 4-1 and notching their 50th all-time win at the venue.
This marks Houston's second straight win over UCF in the rivalry known as the Space Game. Despite early struggles, the Cougars found their rhythm and dominated the latter part of the contest.
Red Zone Woes in the First Half
Houston's offense sputtered in the first half, failing to capitalize on three red-zone opportunities. Quarterback Conner Weigman struggled with accuracy, missing open receivers and overthrowing passes. The Cougars ran 38 plays compared to UCF's 29, gained 11 first downs to UCF's 8, and rushed for 72 yards to UCF's 27, yet entered halftime with zero points.
On a fourth-and-one at the UCF three-yard line, Weigman's pass fell incomplete. Later, after senior wide receiver Trent Walker returned the ball to the UCF 26, Houston faced another fourth-and-two at the three, but Weigman missed redshirt junior running back ReShaun Sanford II. A subsequent drive starting at the UCF 44 also ended in disappointment when Overmyer fumbled at the seven-yard line, and UCF recovered in the end zone for a touchback.
McCutchin's Game-Changing Play
After Houston finally scored its first touchdown, senior linebacker Latreveon McCutchin shifted the momentum. McCutchin, who had a pick-six against UCF last year in Orlando, nearly repeated the feat. On a critical third down late in the third quarter, he tipped a pass from senior quarterback Keyone Jenkins, intercepted it at the UCF 19, and returned it 17 yards to the two-yard line. Two plays later, Weigman scored on a keeper, cutting the deficit to 17-14.
Explosive Second-Half Surge
The Cougars seemed poised for a letdown, trailing 17-0 with six minutes left in the third quarter. But the offense suddenly ignited, scoring 27 unanswered points. Houston marched 75 yards in seven plays, capped by Weigman's 19-yard rushing touchdown, taking just over two minutes. McCutchin's interception four plays later set up another score, and the Cougars took their first lead on an 11-play, 62-yard drive ending with Weigman's one-yard plunge.
Redshirt sophomore kicker Jonathan Dimas added two field goals to extend the lead. Meanwhile, Houston's defense clamped down, allowing just 17 yards on 13 plays over UCF's final four drives.
Weigman's Rushing Heroics
Despite not throwing a touchdown pass and completing only 18 of 33 attempts for 239 yards (55%), Weigman made his mark on the ground with three rushing touchdowns. Head coach Willie Fritz revealed postgame that Weigman was severely ill but gutted it out. This marked the first time a Houston quarterback rushed for three scores since Donovan Smith in 2023.
Defensive Resilience and Lapses
Houston's defense bounced back from a poor showing against Georgia Southern, forcing a turnover and limiting UCF to 4-of-14 on third down and 1-of-3 on fourth down. However, there were letdowns: UCF scored on a third-and-goal from the 13 on its opening drive, and Jenkins scored the Knights' only second-half touchdown when Houston failed to wrap him up. Missed tackles also allowed big gains at times.
