Heather Dinich Reveals Her Top 12 College Football Playoff Rankings, Explains Alabama's Standing Despite Controversial Call

Alabama supporters need not worry, according to ESPN analyst Heather Dinich. In her latest projection, the Crimson Tide would still secure a spot in the College Football Playoff if the postseason began today.

Despite a contentious ending in Saturday night's 20-17 loss to No. 2 Georgia, where a questionable non-pass interference call and a personal foul by Dijon Lee late in the game drew scrutiny, Dinich believes Alabama remains firmly in contention. She noted on Sunday that while the selection committee will certainly be cognizant of those officiating decisions, they will also take into account the personal foul penalty.

"People have to remember that the committee doesn't rank teams based on officiating, it ranks them on results," Dinich stated.

In her current top 12, Dinich lists Georgia first, followed by Miami, Notre Dame, Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, Indiana, BYU, Ole Miss, UCLA, Utah, and Kentucky. She explained that Alabama's victory over Kentucky carries more weight at this stage of the season than Ohio State's win at Iowa, which is why the Tide edge out the Buckeyes in her rankings.

Conversely, Texas sits ahead of Ohio State due to the Longhorns' head-to-head victory earlier in the season.

Key Analysis

Dinich's rankings underscore the committee's emphasis on overall performance rather than isolated officiating controversies. While the Bulldogs benefited from a disputed call, Alabama's résumé—highlighted by a quality win over Kentucky—keeps them in the playoff conversation. The head-to-head result between Texas and Ohio State further illustrates how direct matchups influence the committee's evaluations.
