In a recent mailbag segment, Ira Winderman tackled a variety of questions from Miami Heat fans, ranging from the team's preseason schedule to the need for a playmaking guard and the status of local television broadcasts.
One fan, Jan, questioned why the Heat play five exhibition games when starters often play only half the game and some sit out entirely. Winderman acknowledged the business aspect, noting that charging for tickets while not paying the talent is a favorable practice. He explained that teams typically prefer at least two home exhibitions—one to assess weaknesses and another to fine-tune before the regular season. If each team wants two home games, opponents would each play two road games. However, five preseason games might be excessive, especially since teams rarely risk rotation players in the finale. Winderman pointed out that the NFL and NHL have moved to reduce preseason and increase regular-season games, which at least gives extra games meaning. Despite the debate, he conceded that Saturday's game at Kaseya Center was quality theater.
Another fan, Rich from Plantation, challenged the criticism that the Heat lack creators, asking if Giannis Antetokounmpo can't create. Winderman agreed that Antetokounmpo can create, as can Bam Adebayo. However, he emphasized that when pressure mounts, stakes are high, and the season's wear takes its toll, a true playmaker is needed to navigate those challenges. While coach Erik Spoelstra believes in position-less basketball, Winderman noted that the point guard position has existed for decades for a reason, and playmaking point guards have made significant impacts. He then questioned whether Davion Mitchell is enough in that role and whether Dru Smith and Tre Donaldson provide adequate support if the Heat truly consider themselves contenders.
Finally, Stu from Palm Beach inquired about television coverage. Winderman clarified that it's not his decision, but those in power insist that an over-the-air package for the Palm Beach and southwest Florida markets will be in place before the October 21 regular-season opener against the Timberwolves. It is also expected to be available in the Palm Beach market for Wednesday night's home exhibition against the Nets.
