They say you can't teach speed.

So with their third-round pick in the 2026 MLB Draft , the Guardians selected someone who already had learned it.

That was Houston outfielder Tre Broussard , whom the Guardians took at No.

95 overall.

He entered the draft as MLB Pipeline's No.

91-rated player.

Broussard's calling card is his speed, and a high contact rate to make that acceleration count.

Guardians VP of scouting operations Paul Gillispie described Broussard as a "twitchy, athletic" outfielder who fits the mold of other speedy center fielders who have carved out their roles atop a lineup in similar fashions.

In the last two seasons with Houston, he swiped 56 bases on 64 attempts for an 88% success rate.

Yeah, just a high-end athlete with big-time speed, stolen a lot of bases, Gillispie said.

He makes a lot of contact, a lot of frequent, hard contact.

Just another player who we think we can bring into our environment, and he has a chance to really blossom here.

Guardians open 2026 MLB Draft with Liam Peterson, Logan Schmidt, Tre Broussard The Guardians opened their 2026 draft by selecting Florida right-handed pitcher Liam Peterson.

They then used their second-round pick to take high school southpaw Logan Schmidt at No.

59 overall.

To make most of the people reading this feel quite old, Schmidt was born in 2008, but his fastball can already reach the high 90s.

Although Peterson is a much more polished collegiate starting pitcher, Schmidt is more than three years his junior and would enter the Guardians minor league system as more of a raw prospect.

We think players are the ones that really drive their development, Gillispie said of the 17-year-old pitcher.

And so when you think about upside and you think about ceilings and those types of things, I think we believe we try not to label players and put ceilings on them.

"We really think those things are kind of unknowable, but we also think in the right environment, whether it be Logan or any of the players we drafted today, we think once we get them in our environment, we have the ability to impact them not only on the field but off the field.
