Just a week ago, the Cleveland Guardians stared at a 2-0 deficit in the ALDS, teetering on the edge of a premature playoff departure. But since that Game 2 defeat, the Guardians' offense has found another gear, overwhelming opponents in the postseason.
That offensive awakening fueled three consecutive victories to close out the ALDS and escape elimination. The momentum carried into Monday, as Cleveland took down the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 in Game 1 of the ALCS.
The Guardians' bats erupted for 14 hits and a walk, plating seven runs. Jose Ramirez and Chase DeLauter spearheaded the attack, combining to go 6-for-9 with two RBI. Nathaniel Lowe and Jo Adell also made significant contributions, driving in four of the seven runs between them.
Such an offensive display was unexpected given the regular-season series between these clubs, where Cleveland managed only six total runs across six games.
Snatching Game 1 was crucial for the Guardians, who now hold a pitching edge for Games 2 and 3. Left-hander Parker Messick (12-9, 2.56 ERA) takes the mound for Cleveland in Game 2 on Tuesday, while right-hander Gavin Williams (14-8, 3.76 ERA, 254 K) is lined up for Game 3 on Thursday.
With an offense averaging 6.75 runs per game over its last four and a pitching advantage, Cleveland has a legitimate shot to return home with a surprising 2-0 series lead and one of the most dominant postseason pitchers this season set to start.
