As the New York Giants gear up for their Week 5 clash with the Washington Commanders on Sunday, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy voiced strong approval of quarterback JJ McCarthy's development in picking up the team's offensive scheme.
During a Thursday session with reporters, Nagy awarded McCarthy a top-tier grade for his advancement since joining the organization.
"I would say it's an A-plus," Nagy remarked. "He's doing really well. That's as best as I can put it."
The Giants secured McCarthy in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings on September 28, but he has yet to see action in a game for his new squad.
Nagy pointed out that McCarthy has made significant headway over the last week, attributing it to the efforts of the coaching staff and the quarterback's dedication to mastering the playbook.
Quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan and offensive quality control coach Mike Snyder have been instrumental in getting McCarthy and fellow quarterback Jake Haener ready for whatever roles they might fill.
Even so, Nagy emphasized that McCarthy's growth is still ongoing. The Giants' coaching staff is pinpointing plays that highlight his abilities and figuring out how to integrate them into the offense.
At the same time, both McCarthy and Haener need to grasp the entire game plan, which makes preparations more intricate than just crafting a niche package.
In the Giants' prior matchup, they had a set of plays ready for McCarthy, but the coaches opted not to deploy them.
Nagy has not provided a timeline for when McCarthy's duties might expand or whether he will leapfrog Haener on the depth chart.
Head coach John Harbaugh mentioned on Monday that McCarthy might be elevated to the backup quarterback spot for Sunday's game. That would put him behind starter Jameis Winston, but the team has not made any official announcement.
In the meantime, Haener is continuing to prepare alongside McCarthy in case the quarterback situation evolves.
Nagy's recent praise indicates that McCarthy is making steady progress in his adjustment, but any promotion will hinge on how the coaching staff evaluates his readiness.
