The upcoming ACC showdown between Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech is drawing near, with the Yellow Jackets set to visit Blacksburg on Saturday. Georgia Tech enters the game with momentum after an upset victory over Duke last weekend, and they are eyeing another surprise against the Hokies.
Virginia Tech started the season 4-0 and generated buzz as a potential ACC Championship contender, but those hopes have dimmed after consecutive losses to Pittsburgh and California. Although the Hokies are considered favorites for this matchup, they were also favored last week against Cal and fell to a Golden Bears team that was without its starting quarterback, top defensive player, and a new play-caller.
Ahead of the game, Georgia Tech revealed its uniform combination: gold helmets, white jerseys, and white pants.
Can the Yellow Jackets pull off another upset? Under head coach Brent Key, Georgia Tech has developed a reputation for knocking off ACC opponents when least expected, as evidenced by last week's win over the Blue Devils. Just a few weeks ago, the idea that Georgia Tech would have more momentum than Virginia Tech seemed far-fetched, but after last week, it's hard to argue otherwise. That doesn't guarantee a victory, but there is certainly more belief around the program than there was a couple of weeks ago.
During his Thursday media session, Key praised the Hokies and the impact James Franklin has had: "They are really good against the run. They're good getting pressure on the quarterback. Brent Pry is a guy that we know very well. Have gone against him a lot. One of the good guys in the business really is. Brent is a hell of a guy, hell of a coach. Really looking forward to going against his defense and what he does on defense. Offensively, a couple of new guys in the league that follow James with him and the offensive coordinator. Really on offense starts with quarterback. Older guy experienced, does a really good job running the offense, can make all the throws, sneaky fast in how he moves, and he'll throw it up there. So they get three really good running backs. Can't really tell who's the starter, who's not the starter there with those two guys, with two of them. And then they have, in my opinion, what is the best tight end room in the country. They are deep."
Although Lane Stadium is a challenging venue, Georgia Tech has enjoyed success in Blacksburg before. The question is whether they can find a way to win again on Saturday.
Key Analysis
Georgia Tech's recent upset over Duke has shifted the narrative, giving the Yellow Jackets unexpected momentum heading into a tough road environment. Virginia Tech's two-game skid has raised questions, and the Hokies' loss to a depleted Cal team last week highlights their vulnerability. While Virginia Tech remains the favorite, Georgia Tech's knack for pulling off surprises under Brent Key makes this a compelling matchup. The uniform choice—gold helmets with white jerseys and pants—adds a visual element to the story, but the real focus will be on whether the Yellow Jackets can capitalize on their recent success and secure another statement win.
