Georgia Holds No. 1 as Florida and Mississippi State Tumble in B/R's Week 5 Top 25 Shake-Up

In the latest B/R College Football Experts Top 25 following Week 5, the Georgia Bulldogs remain at No. 1, while the Texas Longhorns, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Miami Hurricanes, and Alabama Crimson Tide complete the top five. The weekend delivered several lopsided results that reshuffled the rankings, particularly for early-season surprises Florida and Mississippi State, both of whom were handed humbling defeats.

Florida, which had surged into the national spotlight after a 52-28 rout of Ole Miss, was brought back to earth in a 45-17 loss to Missouri. The Gators' vaunted rushing attack, which amassed 302 yards against the Rebels, was limited to just 42 yards on 25 carries. Jadan Baugh, who torched Ole Miss for 142 yards and three scores, managed only 13 yards on 12 attempts. Missouri's Jamal Roberts exploited Florida's defense for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries, as the Tigers dominated from the second quarter onward.

Mississippi State, another upstart, fell 56-23 to Alabama. Freshman quarterback Kamario Taylor threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns but also tossed two interceptions and lost a fumble, helping Alabama turn a close game into a blowout. The Bulldogs' rushing attack was nonexistent, managing just 18 yards on 30 carries. Alabama's Keelon Russell outdueled Taylor, completing 16-of-22 passes for 285 yards and three scores, while the Crimson Tide defense forced four turnovers, recorded five sacks, and nine tackles for loss.

In another clash of ranked teams, Ohio State's offense overwhelmed Iowa's defense in a 31-14 victory. Julian Sayin threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns, and Jeremiah Smith hauled in 11 catches for 206 yards and two scores. The Buckeyes' defense capitalized on two Iowa turnovers, converting both into touchdowns. The loss dropped Iowa from No. 14 to No. 23.

Elsewhere, Pittsburgh improved to 5-0 with a 35-33 win at Virginia Tech, capitalizing on four Hokies turnovers and a missed field goal as time expired. However, the Panthers lost quarterback Mason Heintschel to injury in the second half; he was later seen on crutches. Backup Holden Gernier guided the go-ahead touchdown drive in the fourth quarter.

Nebraska continued its surprising undefeated start, moving to 5-0 with a 48-23 win over Maryland. Anthony Colandrea totaled 238 passing yards, 108 rushing yards, and three touchdowns. The Cornhuskers scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to turn a close game into a rout.

USC edged Washington 25-21 behind a stout defensive effort that held the Huskies to 1-for-12 on third down and forced six punts. The Trojans' defense stopped a 15-play, 77-yard drive at their own 18-yard line to seal the win.

UCLA, idle in Week 5, remains undefeated at 4-0 and averages 281.5 rushing yards per game, trailing only Army, Air Force, Navy, and West Virginia. The Bruins face a tough test at Oregon next.

Duke, also on bye, is 4-0 for the third time in four years. Running back Nate Shepard leads the nation with 644 rushing yards and six touchdowns. The Blue Devils have outscored opponents 145-44 and don't face a ranked team until Nov. 4 at Miami.

Tennessee rebounded from a sluggish offensive performance against Texas with a 24-14 win over Auburn. Backup quarterback George MacIntyre provided a spark, completing 8-of-10 passes for 86 yards, while running back DeSean Bishop carried 34 times for 220 yards and three second-half touchdowns.

Texas Tech stayed perfect at 5-0 with a 29-7 win at Colorado. The Red Raiders defense intercepted Buffaloes quarterback Isaac Wilson three times and recorded four takeaways total, including a pick-six. The offense struggled, going 3-for-12 on third down and being outgained 375-315.

Missouri's dominant win over Florida vaulted the Tigers from No. 23 to No. 12. Utah, BYU, LSU, and Ole Miss round out the top 10, with the Utes and Cougars both undefeated. LSU crushed McNeese 63-14, while Ole Miss was on bye.

Indiana remained undefeated with a 47-15 thrashing of Rutgers, amassing nearly 600 yards of offense. Josh Hoover threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns, while Turbo Richard and Lee Bebee Jr. both rushed for over 100 yards.

Miami stayed at No. 4 with a 41-13 win at Clemson. The Hurricanes' running game powered the offense with 192 yards and three scores, led by Mark Fletcher Jr.'s 77 yards and two touchdowns. The defense limited Clemson to 55 rushing yards and forced freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds into a season-high 41 pass attempts.

Notre Dame remained at No. 3 after a 37-26 win at North Carolina. The Irish overcame a 98-yard kick return touchdown to open the second half by scoring 17 unanswered points. CJ Carr accounted for all five Notre Dame touchdowns, throwing for 234 yards and four scores and adding one on the ground. The running game contributed a season-high 241 yards.

Texas, idle in Week 5, holds at No. 2. The Longhorns boast a strong resume with wins over Ohio State and Tennessee, though both were by a combined four points. Quarterback Arch Manning has been solid but not spectacular, while the defense ranks in the top 20 nationally in total yards and points allowed. Edge rusher Colin Simmons has nine tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

Georgia remains No. 1 after a 38-14 win over Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs led 21-14 at halftime but pulled away with 17 unanswered points in the second half. Quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 25-of-32 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball to 10 different receivers. Vanderbilt managed just 49 yards of offense in the second half.
