The University of Florida's special teams unit received a significant boost of recognition as kicker Patrick Durkin was officially included on the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Award, an honor presented annually to the most outstanding kicker in college football. The announcement, made public on Friday, highlights 35 elite placekickers from across the country who are expected to make a substantial impact during the upcoming season.
Durkin, who joined the Gators via the transfer portal from Tulane University, delivered an impressive performance in his previous stint with the Green Wave. He successfully converted 25 of his 28 field goal attempts and was nearly flawless on extra points, making 41 of 42. His field goal accuracy of 89.3% ranks as the second-best among all returning FBS kickers who attempted at least 20 field goals last season, and his 25 made field goals are tied for the second-most in that same group.
The redshirt sophomore, a Chicago native, demonstrated his capabilities during Florida's spring game in April at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, where he connected on three field goals but narrowly missed a 49-yard attempt as time expired. Florida's special teams coordinator, Johnathan Galante, expressed confidence in Durkin's transition, stating, "He's just getting comfortable and had a great season last year. He transitions now to a whole new town, a whole new city, a whole new environment, higher level. And he did well. He finished better than he started spring ball and in the position he's in right now, I'm very excited where he's at."
About the Lou Groza Award
The Lou Groza Award is named in honor of Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker Lou Groza, who spent 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, winning four NFL championships and earning NFL Player of the Year honors in 1954. Groza, also an All-Pro offensive lineman, was instrumental in establishing the role of a dedicated kicker in professional football. To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the award, this year's watch list has been expanded to include 35 kickers, symbolizing three and a half decades of recognizing the sport's premier placekicker.
The selection committee evaluated returning kickers based on career achievements, statistical performance, consistency, and projected impact for the upcoming season. As the season progresses, the Groza Award will announce its 20 semifinalists on November 17. From that pool, a panel of over 100 FBS head coaches, sports information directors, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers will select three finalists, announced on November 24. The national winner will be revealed on December 10 during the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
