Gator Bowl's 2026 'Dream Team' Welcomes Brave Young Ambassadors

The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl has officially unveiled its 2026 Dream Team, a special group of young individuals who are set to experience the excitement of college football in a unique way. On August 6, at WJCT Studios, twelve children and teens aged 5 to 16 signed their letters of intent to become ambassadors and honorary members of the Gator Bowl Association. These youngsters, hailing from the First Coast and South Georgia, were celebrated with a media day and a signing ceremony that featured introductions through a balloon arch filled with smoke.

The Dream Teamers, all of whom are battling or have overcome significant health challenges such as childhood cancer, brain tumors, heart defects, genetic mutations, and cerebral palsy, will have the opportunity to attend team selection meetings and go on a scouting trip to a University of Florida game. When the SEC and ACC teams are chosen for the Gator Bowl on December 30 at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN, the Dream Teamers will meet players, coaches, cheerleaders, and mascots, and will be recognized on the field before the game. Later in the year, they will receive their official green jackets and personalized trading cards.

Key Analysis

The Dream Team initiative highlights the resilience and bravery of these children, a quality that Gator Bowl President Greg McGarity emphasized, noting that bravery is what unites them. The event also holds personal significance for Mike Cobb, President and CEO of Momentum Transportation, the sponsor of the Dream Team. His daughter, Abbey, who was born with scoliosis and underwent multiple surgeries, was able to fulfill her own dream of visiting Universal Studios at age 17. Now 25, Abbey works in her father's marketing department and is planning her wedding. Her mother, Vicki Cobb, joined the Dreams Come True board after the organization helped her daughter, expressing a desire to give back. Mike Cobb shared a touching story of a young girl awaiting a kidney transplant whose only wish is to go swimming afterward, illustrating the simple yet profound desires of these children.

Dreams Come True, the organization behind this effort, was founded in Jacksonville in 1984 and has since granted dreams to over 5,200 children in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Executive Director Anna Valent, attending her fourth Dream Team day, remarked on the magical nature of the event, noting that while a trip to Disney might seem ordinary to many, for these kids it is an incredible achievement. The organization also provides support to families navigating their children's medical journeys. More information can be found at dreamscometrue.org and taxslayergatorbowl.com.
