Tallahassee, FL - The Florida State Seminoles donned full pads for the first time this fall, marking a significant step in their preseason preparations. Head coach Mike Norvell, visibly enthusiastic about the transition, addressed the media following the session, expressing satisfaction with the team's intensity and focus.
Norvell described the practice as highly competitive, with emotions running high as players adjusted to the physicality of full-contact drills. He acknowledged that while there were a few areas needing refinement, the overall energy was positive. "It was very competitive," Norvell said. "Some heightened emotions, just your first day with shoulder pads on, so couple things we get to clean up and just control."
A notable highlight was the debut of true freshman linebacker Izayia Williams, who had been sidelined during his senior year of high school due to a torn ACL. Williams, now fully cleared, made an immediate impact. Norvell praised his explosive and aggressive first rep in a tackling drill, noting, "I mean his very first rep. I mean speed, explosive, violent, and I was jumping on him, draped all over him. He's got the skill set, the traits. You can see there's no hesitation."

The offensive line drew praise from Norvell for its communication and combination blocking, despite facing a formidable defensive front. He highlighted the group's potential, noting that they handled the challenge well. "I mean there were some really good IDs, some really good things where you see guys working combinations," Norvell explained. "Obviously our defense has presented a lot of challenges, just with the explosiveness they have on the D-line."
Speaking of the defensive line, which has been characterized as undersized but athletic, Norvell emphasized that the unit's strength and get-off were more crucial than scheme. "It's a powerful group. I mean, some guys might not weigh 300 pounds, but I mean, they're strong and they hold the point. They can knock people back," he said. "You don't have to move this group every play for them to be explosive, and they're showing that." The speed of the second level, including linebackers and safeties, also caught his attention, with Norvell noting their ability to fit the box and close quickly.
On offense, freshman wide receiver Jasen Lopez had a standout day with three big plays. Norvell also pointed out that the receiver group is benefiting from the return of defensive backs Quindarrius Jones and JaBril Rawls, who were limited in the spring. "When you get JaBril and Duce out there, two of the best in college football, competing, it's fun watching that," Norvell said, referring to Rawls and senior wide receiver Duce Robinson. Additionally, he expressed excitement about the tight end group, praising their speed and determination.
