In the NHL's Heritage Classic on Sunday night at Princess Auto Stadium, goaltender Jacob Fowler turned aside 33 shots to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.
Lane Hutson and Kaiden Guhle each found the back of the net for Montreal, which also received two assists from Cole Caufield. The win improved the Canadiens' record to 6-3-2.
The Canadiens began a four-game road trip on Friday with a 4-1 win against Chicago. Fowler has now won each of his last five starts.
Isak Rosen scored for Winnipeg with 4:46 remaining in regulation at the home of the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Jets goaltender Stuart Skinner made 19 saves in the loss.
Winnipeg (4-4-3) became the second Canadian team, after Edmonton, to host two outdoor games. The Jets were shut out 3-0 by the Oilers in their first outdoor appearance but spoiled Calgary's 2019 outdoor game at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan, with a 2-1 overtime victory.
Sunday's game was Winnipeg's first since trading franchise goaltender Connor Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils on Friday. Dawson Mercer, the centerpiece of the return from New Jersey, recorded two shots and one blocked shot in 15:22 of ice time.
Next up for the Canadiens: a visit to St. Louis on Tuesday night. The Jets will host Florida on Tuesday night.
