Now, the NHLs two Newsy Lalondes will share a similar team.

Derek Lalonde has been hired as an assistant coach by the Montreal Canadiens.

Hed been let go on Tuesday from his position as an assistant coach by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Montreal Canadiens are hiring Derek Lalonde to join their coaching staff as an assistant.

He will be replacing Trevor Letowski, who's decided to step off the bench to have more time with his family.

It's the Canadiens' desire to keep Letowski in the organization.

He was player-coach of the Habs from 1917-22.

Lalonde later served a second stint as coach of the Canadiens from 1932-34.

With his arrival in Montreal, Derek Lalonde is 50% of the way through the NHLs so-called Original Six teams.

With the Canadiens, hell be replacing Trevor Letowski.

Letowski is stepping down from the coaching staff.

He was hired by Montreal in 2021.

Lalonde was also an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning under Jon Cooper.

He won Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.

The latter win came at the expense of the Canadiens.

Even though Montreal coach Martin St.

Louis spent 13 seasons with the Lightning, the two men never crossed paths.

St.

Louis left Tampa Bay in 2014.

Lalonde was with the Red Wings for Three Seasons Lalonde, 53, was the first head coaching hire by Detroit GM Steve Yzerman.

He took over for Jeff Blashill as head coach of the Red Wings in the summer of 2022.

It was in his role as GM of the Lightning that Yzerman originally hired Lalonde to his first NHL job.

He was 89-86-23 while at the helm of the Red Wings.

Lalonde posted sub-.500 records in two of his three seasons in charge.

He missed the playoffs in each of his first two seasons behind the Detroit bench.

With the Red Wings floundering at 13-17-4, Yzerman let Lalonde go on December 26, 2024.

Todd McLellan , Detroits current coach, replaced Lalonde behind the Red Wings bench.
