The Philadelphia Flyers have made a pair of roster moves, activating forward Denver Barkey from injured reserve while placing forward Nikita Grebenkin on IR with an upper-body injury, the team announced.
Barkey, 21, has been sidelined with a lower-body injury that he sustained on September 21 in a preseason game against the Washington Capitals after colliding with Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary. He initially landed on Philadelphia's season-opening injured reserve and then aggravated the injury during a Flyers practice, which delayed his 2026-27 season debut until tonight.
Despite being selected 95th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Barkey's stock has risen significantly. During his two years with the OHL's London Knights after being drafted, he tallied 60 goals and 184 points in 114 games with a +91 rating, and he captained the Knights to a Memorial Cup championship in 2025.
Last season, the Newmarket, Ontario native split time between the Flyers and the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms, performing well at both levels. With Lehigh Valley, he recorded seven goals and 16 points in 26 games with a -2 rating. In late December, Philadelphia called him up for his NHL debut, and he never looked back. He finished with five goals and 17 points in 54 games with a -6 rating, averaging 13:24 of ice time per game. In the postseason, the former third-round pick added a goal and an assist in 10 contests.
Barkey is expected to slot into the Flyers' fourth line this evening alongside Sean Couturier and Noel Acciari.
Meanwhile, Grebenkin has also been dealing with an injury from training camp, but Philadelphia did not place him on injured reserve until today. The former fifth-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs is in his second season with the Flyers after scoring four goals and 14 points in 55 games last year. Unfortunately, the outlook is grimmer for Grebenkin, as the team has not provided a concrete timeline for his return.
