The opening month of the NHL season was nothing short of eventful for the Florida Panthers, who navigated the loss of key players Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand to lower-body injuries and still managed to find their stride. As October gave way to November, the Panthers stood at 8-4-2, a testament to their resilience and depth.
While team success remains the priority, a slew of individual accomplishments underpinned Florida's strong start. Among the most notable: an astonishing five hat tricks in a single month, a feat that is already tied for the second-most in franchise history (matching the 1999-2000, 2019-20, and 2020-21 seasons). Only the 2021-22 squad, with six, has more.
Brady Tkachuk led the charge with two hat tricks in back-to-back games on Oct. 13 against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Oct. 15 versus the Vancouver Canucks. Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Bennett then both recorded hat tricks on Oct. 17 against the Seattle Kraken, and Anton Lundell capped the month with his first career hat trick on Friday against the Winnipeg Jets.
Key Analysis
Matthew Tkachuk and Seth Jones emerged as Florida's top point producers in October, with both doing the bulk of their damage as playmakers. Tkachuk amassed 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) in 13 games, while Jones tallied 18 points (two goals, 16 assists). The duo became the first Panthers teammates to each register 16 assists in a single month and joined Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux (22) and Paul Coffey (18) as the only forward-defenseman combos in NHL history to each record at least 16 assists in a single October.
Tkachuk's 20-point month was his fifth such calendar month as a Panther, tying Barkov and Pavel Bure for the most in franchise history. Jones, meanwhile, surpassed Keith Yandle (17 points in March 2018) for the most points by a Panthers defenseman in a single calendar month.
Sam Reinhart's power-play prowess also stood out. Through games played Friday, Reinhart had six power-play goals, tied with Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl for the NHL lead. All six came over a nine-game span, marking the third time in his Panthers career that he has scored at least six power-play goals in a calendar month. Reinhart holds the franchise record for power-play goals in a month with 10 in January 2024 and is the only Panthers player to have multiple calendar months with at least six. Olli Jokinen (October 2007), Bure (February 2001), Ray Sheppard (November 1996), and Scott Mellanby (January 1994) each did it once.
Florida's power play operated at 24.2% success rate through October, ranking 11th in the NHL, a significant improvement over the second half of the month.
