FCS Week 3 Standouts: Samuel Gbatu Jr. Shines as Top Offensive Performer

Week 3 of the FCS season featured a plethora of competitive matchups, including numerous cross-conference clashes. The week also marked the start of Ivy League play, providing several 2027 prospects with a chance to launch their 2026 campaigns with strong showings.

Top Offensive Performers of Week 3

UC Davis wide receiver Samuel Gbatu Jr. had a remarkable outing, hauling in 10 of 13 targets for 172 receiving yards, averaging 17.2 yards per catch, and scoring one touchdown. His overall offensive grade stood at 81.2. This marked his third 100-yard game of the season and his second game with double-digit receptions. Gbatu Jr. averaged over 17 yards per reception and 4.4 yards after the catch per reception. His five explosive receptions were a season best, and he played a key role in his team's dominant victory ahead of a crucial Week 4 matchup against Montana.

Gardner-Webb quarterback Cole Pennington turned in a solid performance, completing 24 of 38 passes (63.2%) for 309 yards and two touchdowns, earning an 86.1 offensive grade. Pennington displayed composure and enabled his receivers to make plays on the ball and after the catch. His adjusted completion rate of 68.4% was his second-highest of the season, and his 9.8% big-time throw rate was a season high. After two games without a passing touchdown, his two-score outing against North Carolina Central provided a significant boost.

Top Defensive Performers of Week 3

Tarleton State edge defender Kaleb Brown had his most disruptive game of the year, recording three total tackles, one tackle for loss, one solo tackle, one sack, and one interception, with a 77.0 defensive grade. Brown's quickness, leverage, and power off the edge helped him hold his ground against both the run and the pass. His active hands and relentless pressure on the quarterback put him in position to make plays, and he also demonstrated the ability to drop into coverage and force turnovers.
