Farjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League has ended its association with defenseman Cal Foote, only 48 hours after inking the 27-year-old to a one-year contract. The move follows intense criticism from fans, members, partners, and club personnel regarding the signing.
Foote was among five members of Canada's 2018 World Junior team who faced sexual assault charges stemming from an alleged incident in a London, Ontario hotel room in June 2018. All five were acquitted in July 2025. Farjestad initially stated they conducted a thorough review, including conversations with individuals knowledgeable about the matter, before signing Foote on Tuesday. However, the club's perception shifted in subsequent days, leading to the contract's termination on Thursday.
In a statement, Farjestad acknowledged the reactions: "We have taken note of the reactions from and held discussions with supporters, members, partners, leaders, employees and others who care about Farjestad BK. Many have shared their concern, disappointment and questions regarding our decision to sign the player." The club explained that developments made it clear the situation had escalated to a scale impacting people around the club in an unacceptable way. "The conditions necessary to allow the team, the club or the player in question to maintain the focus required to perform their duties effectively are no longer there," the statement added. Farjestad expressed hope that ending the partnership would allow the club to reunite and focus on the upcoming season.
