Falcons' Kevin Stefanski Marvels at Michael Penix Jr.'s Relentless Rehab: 'He Works Like a Crazy Man'

Following the Atlanta Falcons' 29-20 upset victory over the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. delivered a standout performance, passing for 213 yards and three touchdowns. The win marked a significant turnaround for Atlanta, which had stumbled to an 0-2 start before Penix's return.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski has been particularly impressed with how the young quarterback approached his recovery from a torn ACL suffered last season. In an interview with Albert Breer of SI.com, Stefanski lauded Penix's work ethic and determination.

"I'll tell you, he's a very, very diligent person," Stefanski said. "And even going back to the spring, where he's not taking team reps, he's doing everything in his power to learn the new system. He's doing everything in his power to get his body right. And then we're just following the lead of the medical team, and he does a little bit more here, a little more there. But all the while, working to get ready to play. Now, I didn't know when he was going to get cleared. We didn't know when that time was going to come. But he works like a crazy man to get his body right, to get his mind right."

Penix has compiled a 3-2 record as the starter this year, with one of those losses coming in overtime against the Baltimore Ravens. Since his return, the Falcons have appeared to be a different team, and with the NFC South once again wide open, the 3-4 Falcons have a legitimate opportunity to end an eight-year playoff drought.

Key Analysis

Penix's dedication to his rehabilitation and his rapid grasp of the new offensive system have been crucial to Atlanta's resurgence. His ability to lead the team to victories, including against a strong 49ers squad, underscores his potential as a franchise quarterback. The Falcons' playoff hopes now hinge on Penix maintaining his high level of play and the team capitalizing on a vulnerable division.
