Elliotte Friedman's Maple Leafs update is a compelling one after Darren Raddysh trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs surprised the NHL by trading for star defenseman Darren Raddysh.

It'd be wise to not be surprised about what comes next.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said in a new radio appearance that there could be more: Elliotte Friedman on the FAN Hockey Show says the Leafs could do a couple more things this week that could be pretty interesting.

They have some options, some big opportunities here if they want to do it Willyston Riellander (@nylanderthews) June 22, 2026 Says Raddysh is the first of several..

MORE: It's time to ask a serious Matthew Knies question This is a big week for Toronto no matter what.

The 2026 NHL Draft begins on Friday, and the Leafs have the No.

1 overall pick.

They're expected to take the supremely talented Canadian winger Gavin McKenna.

The Maple Leafs certainly seem likely to trade defenseman Morgan Rielly away at some point, so maybe that's part of what Friedman is referring to.

But is the suggestion that more veteran players are coming aboard to try and quickly return to contention? That could be in play.

It seems highly unlikely they'd deal the first overall pick, unless they came up with some reason not to take McKenna.

The Rielly contract is a big piece of all of this.

If they get that off the books, they can bring on someone else of high caliber and strong talent.

It's time to pay attention, though.

The Maple Leafs are going to do more.
