Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl champion, has shared his thoughts on the media scrutiny faced by his nephew, Arch Manning, following the young quarterback's controversial remarks about ESPN reporter Holly Rowe. The incident occurred when Arch laughed at an AI-generated video depicting Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian slapping Rowe during a post-game interview disagreement at a press conference last week.
The fallout from Arch's reaction was more intense than the actual confrontation between Sarkisian and Rowe, leading the young QB to issue an apology, which Rowe publicly accepted.
Eli Manning's Perspective on Arch's Media Education
In a recent interview, Eli Manning was asked about Arch's comments regarding Rowe. The 45-year-old uncle stated that Arch will need to learn how to manage his relationship with the media on his own. "My advice is football stuff," Eli said. "He'll have to figure out the media on his own. A lot of it is just growing pains. You feel like [the media's] your pal, you relax with them a little bit, you try to be funny, and then they can take it and run. You gotta be careful and find the moments where you can be funny and relaxed, but there are certain things you have to learn and deal with. I think he has learned, apologised, and done the right steps in handling that."
Many fans were upset with Eli's reaction, feeling it downplayed the accountability Arch needed to take after openly laughing about violence against a female reporter.
However, Eli appears to be generally referring to Arch needing to be more cautious about what he shares publicly, regardless of his personal feelings about the video.
Given that Arch is projected as a first-round NFL Draft pick next season, he will undergo much more media training, making this incident a mere bump in what is hoped to be a long career.
