In a significant midseason move during the 1999 NBA campaign, the Charlotte Hornets struck a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers to acquire guard Eddie Jones and big man Elden Campbell. The trade package sent to Los Angeles was built around sharpshooter Glen Rice, marking a pivotal shift for both franchises.
Upon joining the Hornets, Jones quickly established himself as a premier two-way player. In his first full season with Charlotte, he earned an All-Star selection and placed third in the voting for Defensive Player of the Year, showcasing his elite abilities on both ends of the floor.
Over the course of 102 games in a Hornets uniform, Jones stuffed the stat sheet with averages of 19.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks per contest. His tenure, though brief, left a lasting impression on the franchise and its fans.
After the 1999-2000 season, Jones and the Hornets orchestrated a sign-and-trade agreement that sent him to the Miami Heat. In return, Charlotte received a package headlined by forward Jamal Mashburn, who would become a key contributor for the team.
Jones went on to enjoy a 14-year NBA career, earning three All-Star appearances, three All-Defensive Team honors, one steals title, and one All-NBA selection. Across 954 career games, he maintained averages of 14.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.7 steals, and 0.6 blocks.
