At 2-4 through Week 7, the Philadelphia Eagles are already facing questions about the future, and it's not too early to start planning for the offseason. The team has a staggering 22 pending unrestricted free agents, according to Spotrac, and many of them will not be returning. Such is the nature of the NFL business, where roster turnover is a constant.
However, a few impending UFAs have made a strong case for themselves with their early-season performances, catching the eye of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. Here are three players who deserve contract extensions before they hit the open market.
Moro Ojomo, DT
Moro Ojomo is in the final year of the four-year rookie deal he signed in 2023, and he has quietly become a key contributor for Philadelphia. Despite being overshadowed by star defensive tackles Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, Ojomo has appeared in 40 consecutive games over the past three seasons, recording 20 quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, and six sacks. He is a reliable rotation piece who maintains the defensive line's production when called upon, a valuable asset for any team. However, retaining him may be challenging. The Eagles already have significant money invested in Carter and Davis, and they have other needs to address. Ojomo, a Texas product, will surely attract interest from other teams in free agency.
Tyler Steen, OG
The offensive line in Philadelphia is entering a new era. Longtime staples Lane Johnson (retired) and Cam Jurgens (traded to the Ravens) are gone, and Landon Dickerson's future with the team is uncertain. The Eagles need to start building for the future on the line, and keeping Steen would be a wise move. Steen, 26, moved into a starting role last season after limited opportunities in his first two years and has been solid, earning respectable Pro Football Focus grades despite struggles elsewhere on the line. With many productive years ahead, it would benefit both parties if Steen continued his career in an Eagles uniform.
Fred Johnson, OT
Veteran offensive tackle Fred Johnson signed a one-year, relatively inexpensive deal with the Eagles in free agency in March. The team could look to sign him to a similar deal next offseason to maintain inexpensive, experienced depth on the offensive line. Johnson has played only 14 offensive snaps this season, but he played nearly 60% of snaps last season and over 40% when the Eagles won the Super Bowl two years ago. He isn't flashy and doesn't offer much upside, but he provides decent depth at good value—the kind of player every team needs. The Eagles will undoubtedly address the offensive line in the 2027 NFL Draft, but retaining a few familiar faces wouldn't hurt.
