Dylan Larkin Nearing Return for Red Wings After Upper-Body Injury Progress

Dylan Larkin has been a central figure in the Detroit Red Wings' offseason narrative. The forward requested a trade, had his captaincy revoked, and then was sidelined at the beginning of training camp due to an upper-body injury.

Now, there is a positive update on Larkin's condition, as reported by Michael Whitaker of The Hockey News. Head coach Todd McLellan stated that Larkin has made progress. Whitaker shared on X, formerly Twitter, that Larkin won't play tomorrow, but there is a chance he could suit up for the preseason finale on Saturday.

The Red Wings wrap up their preseason schedule on September 26 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They will then kick off the regular season on October 2 at home against the New York Rangers.

Larkin was selected 15th overall by Detroit in the 2014 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut with the team in 2015-16, appearing in 80 games and recording 23 goals and 22 assists. That season also marked his only playoff appearance, where he played five games and scored one goal. Since then, the Red Wings have not qualified for the postseason.

In his career with the franchise, Larkin has skated in 808 games, amassing 276 goals and 367 assists. His 643 points rank tenth in team history and are the most among active players. He also sits ninth in franchise history in goals and 11th in assists.

Larkin was named team captain in 2021 but lost that role in September following his trade request.
