Duke Blue Devils: Undefeated but Overlooked in AP Top 25?

The Duke Blue Devils are making a compelling case for national relevance in 2026, but the AP Top 25 voters have yet to fully acknowledge their undefeated start. Despite a 4-0 record and a notable road victory over Illinois, Duke finds itself on the outside looking in, with the second-most votes (101) among unranked teams, just behind Wisconsin (102).

Head coach Manny Diaz and his staff entered the season with a roster filled with new and unproven faces after several key departures. Yet, through four weeks, the Blue Devils have emerged as a legitimate contender in the ACC, silencing early doubts.

Why Duke Deserves Consideration

A 62-7 demolition of William & Mary last weekend may not have been enough to propel Duke into the AP Top 25, but the team's overall body of work suggests it belongs. The Blue Devils rank 10th nationally in ESPN's strength of record, a metric that evaluates a team's record based on the quality of its opponents. That places them ahead of several ranked squads, including No. 20 Houston (44th), No. 21 SMU (37th), No. 22 Boise State (31st), No. 23 UCLA (16th), and No. 25 Missouri (42nd).

SMU's inclusion above Duke is particularly puzzling. The Mustangs lost to Louisville and have wins over Florida State, UC Davis, and Missouri State. Boise State fell to Oregon by seven points and has beaten Memphis, South Dakota, and Western Michigan. While Duke hasn't faced a powerhouse schedule, it boasts no losses and at least one respectable win. Moreover, the Blue Devils have dominated when expected, outscoring Tulane, Stanford, and William & Mary by a combined 114-17.

When Will Duke Break Through?

Duke earned a spot in the coaches poll this week at No. 21, but the AP Top 25 remains elusive. The Blue Devils have won eight straight games dating back to last season, including an ACC Championship, and haven't been ranked in the AP poll since 2023. That drought could end soon. With a bye this week, Duke might sneak in depending on other teams' results. After the break, the Blue Devils travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech (1-3) on Oct. 10, then host North Carolina (2-1) on Oct. 17. A convincing win over the Yellow Jackets could provide the final push needed to secure a ranking.
