Duke Basketball's 2028 Recruiting Push: New Commit Montgomery Eyes Hiller and Kamagate

Duke basketball's recruiting efforts under head coach Jon Scheyer are in full swing for both the 2027 and 2028 classes. While no further official visits are scheduled for 2027 prospects, the Blue Devils are making significant strides with 2028 targets, including a pair of potential reclassification candidates.

Newest Duke commit Asa Montgomery, a five-star forward, has made it clear he wants to build a strong class. In an interview with League Ready, Montgomery expressed his desire to recruit Colton Hiller and Yann Kamagate to join him in Durham. "Definitely Colton Hiller, hope he can come. Yann ... I hope he can come too," Montgomery said. His commitment was announced with a social media post captioned "That's the move fam."

Hiller, the No. 2 overall player in the 2028 class per the 247Sports Composite, took an official visit to Duke in early October. The Blue Devils are currently in a two-team race with Florida for his services. Notably, Hiller's older brother, Maxwell, is committed to the Gators as a football player in the 2027 class. If Colton were to reclassify, he would need to spend two years in college basketball.

Kamagate, a 7-foot-0, 230-pound center, holds offers from Arizona, BYU, Duke, Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Michigan, and Texas, among others. At 18 years old, he would only need to spend one year in college if he reclassifies into 2027. With most of Duke's 2026-27 rotation eligible to return in 2027-28, it will be intriguing to see if Scheyer and his staff continue to heavily pursue both Hiller and Kamagate should they reclassify.

Key Analysis

Beyond Hiller and Kamagate, Duke has extended offers to three other 2028 prospects. Most recently, five-star combo guard Brady Pettigrew, ranked No. 12 in the class, announced his offer on Thursday. The Blue Devils have also offered five-star point guard Josiah Rose (No. 6) and five-star Mason Collins (No. 8). With a strong trio of 2027 commits already in place, Duke's 2028 recruiting trail could become even more compelling in the weeks and months ahead.
