Donovan Dent's college basketball journey appeared to have concluded with UCLA's second-round NCAA Tournament exit against UConn. However, a recent judicial decision has altered the landscape, granting athletes from the high school class of 2022 an additional season of eligibility if they have used up their four years by the 2026-27 campaign.
This ruling opens the door for Dent to return for one more collegiate season. On Friday, Dent officially entered the transfer portal, as reported by On3 Sports, and notably, he has attached a 'Do Not Contact' designation, indicating his decision is already finalized.
Gonzaga Bound?
All signs point to Dent heading north to Spokane, where Gonzaga head coach Mark Few has assembled an impressive roster. Even without Dent, the Bulldogs currently hold the 18th-best odds to win the national title, according to DraftKings. Adding Dent to a lineup featuring Isaiah Harwell, Massamba Diop, Davis Fogle, and Braden Huff would undoubtedly bolster Gonzaga's championship aspirations.
Gonzaga has shown significant interest in Dent, and this potential union appears imminent. Such an addition would place the Bulldogs firmly in the conversation for a national championship run.
Dent spent just one season with UCLA after transferring from New Mexico. During his time as a Bruin, he appeared in 35 games, averaging 13.3 points, 7.6 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per contest. His shooting efficiency, however, left room for improvement, with a 41% field goal percentage and a 25% mark from beyond the arc.
The offseason has been eventful for Dent, who had previously announced his retirement and filed a lawsuit against the NCAA. With Friday's ruling, both actions become unnecessary, as Dent will have another opportunity to compete this fall, likely in a Gonzaga uniform.
