Dominykas Pleta's Breakout Game Shines in Iowa State's First Loss

The Iowa State Cyclones experienced their first defeat of the season on Monday night, falling to the Memphis Tigers, and the game offered plenty of lessons for the team.

Despite the loss, there was a significant positive takeaway for the Cyclones: the standout play of sophomore center Dominykas Pleta off the bench.

Entering the matchup, Iowa State was favored to beat Memphis. However, with several new players and Tamin Lipsey returning late to the lineup, the team's overall performance was not up to par.

Defensively, the Cyclones have considerable work ahead, as allowing 80 points in regulation is something head coach T.J. Otzelberger will not take lightly.

Early-season challenges like this one against the Tigers should help Iowa State improve and develop chemistry as the season progresses.

While losing a game is never ideal—especially early in the season to an opponent they were projected to beat—Pleta's performance was a major bright spot.

After seeing action as a backup during his freshman year, Pleta is once again coming off the bench, with senior forward/center Blake Buchanan still on the roster. Like last year, Pleta will be part of the rotation, and possibly with a larger role.

The transition from freshman to sophomore year often brings a significant leap in development, and the big man appears much-improved after just one game.

At 6-foot-11 and 240 pounds, Pleta possesses the size to be a formidable presence for Iowa State, and on Monday, he was a real weapon off the bench.

The starters struggled offensively, and it was the bench that provided a spark, with Pleta and Ryan Prather Jr. contributing.

In just 11 minutes, Pleta totaled 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field.

If Pleta can consistently make that kind of impact off the bench, his role will undoubtedly grow in year two.

Having depth in the frontcourt is crucial, and Pleta's early breakout game against a strong Memphis team is encouraging.

The 15 points marked a career high for the sophomore, and the Cyclones will be hoping it is a sign of things to come.

Key Analysis

Pleta's efficient scoring and rebounding ability could be a game-changer for Iowa State's second unit. His performance against Memphis not only highlights his individual growth but also underscores the importance of bench production in the Cyclones' success this season.
