Dolphins Stick with Malik Willis at QB Despite 0-5 Start, Coach Jeff Hafley Backs Starter

The Miami Dolphins are sticking with Malik Willis as their starting quarterback, even after a winless start to the season. Head coach Jeff Hafley made it clear that the team has no immediate plans to make a change at the position, despite Willis's uneven play through five games.

Willis, who joined the Dolphins as a highly sought-after free agent following a promising stint with the Green Bay Packers last season, has yet to find his footing in Miami. In five starts, he has thrown for 849 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions, completing just 56.2 percent of his passes.

In Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Willis managed only 137 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. The performance raised questions about whether the Dolphins might turn to rookie Kyle McCord after the bye week, but Hafley dismissed that notion.

"It needs to be better, for sure," Hafley said. "But there's signs of it. There was flashes yesterday in that game, especially when I think about that two-minute drive at the half and some of the things he did at the end of the game where he just looked aggressive and comfortable. We gotta work through that."

Key Analysis

Despite the mounting losses and Willis's statistical struggles, Hafley's endorsement suggests the Dolphins value continuity and see potential in the young quarterback. The decision to stick with Willis indicates that the coaching staff believes his issues are correctable and that he gives the team the best chance to compete moving forward. However, with the team at 0-5, the pressure will only intensify if Willis cannot translate those flashes into consistent production.
