Disney is broadening the scope of ESPN's presence on Disney+, with more college football simulcasts scheduled for the upcoming fall season. The announcement came during the company's Q3 earnings call on Wednesday, where executives highlighted the initiative as a key component of ESPN's 'marketplace of sports' strategy, positioning the network as the primary gateway for sports enthusiasts across all Disney-owned platforms.
According to Sportico's Jacob Feldman, Disney stated, 'Meanwhile, we continue to bolster ESPN's place as the front door for sports fans as we build out ESPN's marketplace of sports, creating a single destination for fans.' The company also noted existing partnerships with the NFL, MLB, Fox One, and, as of just yesterday, the CW Network, which will bring over 800 annual hours of CW Sports content to the ESPN app for subscribers with an ESPN Unlimited plan. Disney expressed encouragement over the growing number of subscribers utilizing these options.
Strategic Expansion
This development underscores Disney's ongoing emphasis on ESPN's role as a comprehensive sports hub. The network has long identified fragmentation in live sports as a major consumer pain point and has positioned itself as the solution. As early as 2023, executives articulated a vision to make ESPN the singular destination for all live sports streaming, irrespective of rights holders. However, the initial joint venture, Venu Sports, with Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery, collapsed in January 2025 before launch, after each company had invested over $400 million. Following that failure, Fox and ESPN pivoted to a leaner partnership, launching a $39.99 combined bundle in October 2025, which attracted approximately 2.1 million new ESPN subscribers within 40 days, with 57% opting for the higher-tier Unlimited plan.
The CW Network partnership, first announced in April, integrates CW Sports programming—including ACC, Pac-12, and Mountain West football and basketball, NASCAR's O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, WWE NXT, PBA Bowling, and AVP Volleyball—into the ESPN app for Unlimited subscribers. The service went live on August 4, months after the initial announcement. Disney+ has been part of ESPN's streaming evolution since 2024, when a dedicated tile was added, offering select live games and studio content as a precursor to the standalone ESPN app. While Disney has not specified which additional games will be available on Disney+ this fall, the slate will feature more college football simulcasts, aiming to boost engagement on Disney+ and encourage subscriptions to the combined Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Unlimited bundle.
