Diamondbacks Tap Chris Garagiola as New TV Play-by-Play Announcer

The Arizona Diamondbacks have found their next television play-by-play announcer. Chris Garagiola is set to take over the role, as first reported by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Garagiola will step into the position previously held by Steve Berthiaume, who spent 14 years as the team's TV voice before the organization opted to part ways with him earlier this month. Berthiaume expressed surprise and disappointment at the time of the decision.

At 34 years old, Garagiola brings a decade of broadcasting experience to the booth. He has spent the last three seasons calling Diamondbacks games on the radio, and before that, he hosted the team's radio pre- and postgame shows for two seasons. Prior to joining the Diamondbacks, he worked for four seasons as a broadcaster for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, a Double-A affiliate.

While his recent work has been primarily in radio, Garagiola is no stranger to television. According to Piecoro, he has filled in for Berthiaume on more than 20 games over the past three seasons, drawing praise from fans for his performance.

Garagiola also has deep ties to the Diamondbacks organization. His father, Joe Garagiola Jr., was the franchise's first general manager and played a key role in assembling the roster that won the 2001 World Series. His grandfather, Joe Garagiola Sr., played nine seasons in Major League Baseball from 1946 to 1954 before becoming a television broadcaster, primarily for NBC, and later did part-time work with the Diamondbacks from 1998 to 2012.

Key Analysis

Chris Garagiola's promotion to the television booth marks a significant transition for the Diamondbacks' broadcast team. With his extensive radio background and familial legacy in the organization, he brings both familiarity and a fresh perspective to the role. The move also signals a new chapter for the team's television coverage after Berthiaume's lengthy tenure.
