Devin Carter Eyes Celtics Redemption After Kings and Hawks Stints, Drawing Parallels to Neemias Queta

In today's NBA, there is no guaranteed route to success. While top prospects often enter the league straight from college, an increasing number of overlooked players are climbing the ranks. One such example is Boston Celtics center Neemias Queta. Selected late in the second round of the 2021 draft by the Sacramento Kings, the 7-footer was waived two years later, facing an uncertain future. The Celtics offered him a lifeline with a two-way contract in September 2023. The Lisbon, Portugal native seized the chance, eventually earning a spot on the main roster and starting most of the 2025-26 season. His perseverance paid off this offseason when the 27-year-old agreed to a four-year, $56 million extension with Boston in early July.

Now, Celtics guard Devin Carter is aiming to replicate that challenging yet rewarding journey. Like Queta, Carter was drafted by the Kings—but as a first-round pick, 13th overall in 2024. The Providence College product struggled to find his rhythm in Sacramento, and the Kings traded him to the Atlanta Hawks in late June. The Hawks then waived him, putting the 24-year-old's NBA career in jeopardy. However, Boston stepped in and signed him to an Exhibit 10 deal. Although the 2024 Big East Player of the Year is not on a standard contract, he can compete for a two-way spot in preseason and has already capitalized on his opportunity.

In a 124-113 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night, Carter came off the bench to tally 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. He fearlessly attacked 2025 Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley and consistently crashed the offensive boards. His defensive effort was equally impressive, drawing comparisons to Queta, another preseason standout from years past.

Key Analysis

Carter's path mirrors Queta's, and his early preseason performance suggests he could be another hidden gem for Boston. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor, combined with his motivation to prove himself, makes him a player to watch. With three more preseason games and numerous practices ahead, Carter has ample opportunity to earn a more secure role. His next chance comes Saturday night when the Celtics host the rival Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden.
