Devils Ship Poirier to Capitals Following Hellebuyck Acquisition

In the wake of their blockbuster acquisition of Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, the New Jersey Devils have continued to reshape their goaltending depth. On Monday, the team announced that it has dealt young netminder Remi Poirier to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a seventh-round selection in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Poirier, who was claimed off waivers from the Dallas Stars in late September, spent just over a month in the Devils organization. Despite being on the roster, the 22-year-old did not see any game action for New Jersey this season prior to the trade. He has yet to make his NHL debut but will now have a fresh opportunity with the Capitals.

Key Analysis

Poirier has demonstrated considerable promise in the American Hockey League, which likely prompted Washington to take a chance on him. During the 2022-23 campaign with the Texas Stars, he compiled a 27-19-6 record across 52 AHL contests, along with a .912 save percentage and a 2.61 goals-against average. Over his AHL career, which spans 137 games, he holds a .908 save percentage.

From the Devils' perspective, moving Poirier makes sense given the logjam in net following the Hellebuyck trade. The organization simply had no room for him on the roster, and the trade allows Poirier to seek opportunities elsewhere while New Jersey recoups a future draft asset.
