Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has made it clear that he does not believe former football players who become sports analysts possess a superior understanding of the game simply because they played it. His comments came after Barstool faced criticism for how it treated Mike Katic, a former Indiana Hoosiers standout who now works for the outlet.
Katic's colleagues reportedly mocked him when he tried to argue that Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska, is a difficult venue for opposing teams. This led many fans online to feel that Katic was being disrespected and treated unfairly, especially given his background as a player.
On Sunday, Portnoy posted a video on X in which he made it clear that he does not think playing the sport makes anyone an expert. He said, 'You know what I gotta say? There's so many people who are so dumb on social media and on Earth, and I'm so much smarter than so many of them. And the beauty of social media allows these dumb people to interact with people like me.'
Portnoy then referenced the end of the Washington Commanders vs. New York Giants game, which ended in a tie after poor clock management by the Commanders. He said, 'You go watch the end of this Washington-Giants game. You don't get the field goal off. You just should have spiked it, kicked the field goal. That's not the point. This goes back to everyone being like, you're so stupid for saying Nebraska is not a hard place to play anymore because Mike Katic played football. Like, I never played college football, so I can't tell Mike Katic, who's played at Nebraska, what to think. But then you look at games like this, and there's so many brain-dead dummies.'
Portnoy continued, 'And Katic—I like Katic, but for all you know, he's a brain-dead dummy. Everyone's like, well, you can't overrule him. The stupidest people. These are grunts who play football. These are a lot of grunts who are head coaches. They're big, physical guys. Will Compton, Taylor Lewan, they have CTE. They don't have brains. So when you're like, you can't say you never played.'
Portnoy went on to call former players 'dumb-dumbs' and made it clear that people who treat them as authorities on sports are just as foolish. He said, 'Yeah, but I have a working brain, and a lot of the guys on the field at all levels are dumb-dumbs. So when you say, oh, you didn't play, you didn't play, I wouldn't do that, what just happened in Washington and the Giants in a million f*cking years. I've watched roughly 9 gazillion hours of football. These other guys, these dumb-dumbs, they're just in it being told what to do. Hit, block. So when you come out to me on social media like you can't, you can't say anything because you didn't play the game in college and you didn't do this, you're dumb. You watch these games, the people running these games, Nick Sirianni, dumb. Washington, dumb. What I can't, I can't figure out, you kicked the ball through the end zone in Philadelphia because I didn't play the game. Dumb. These people are dumb. They're athlete dumb. And if you use that as your excuse, like, hey Dave, you can't criticize somebody who played the game, then you're dumb.'
Key Analysis
Portnoy's remarks have sparked further debate about the value of firsthand experience in sports analysis. While he acknowledges that he never played college football, he insists that his extensive viewership gives him a valid perspective. The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between traditionalists who prioritize playing experience and analysts who rely on observational expertise.
