Dan Orlovsky, a familiar face on ESPN where he typically breaks down NFL quarterbacks and defensive schemes, delivered a far more personal message to his social media followers on Thursday. The analyst disclosed that his brother-in-law, Federico 'Fed' Lascano, passed away unexpectedly over the weekend, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Lascano is survived by Orlovsky's sister, Christine, and the couple's three sons. No official cause of death has been released.
Orlovsky called the loss an unimaginable tragedy, noting that his sister now faces the dual challenge of raising the boys alone while coping with the emotional and financial fallout of her husband's death, Us Weekly reported.
In response, the former NFL quarterback is appealing to the public for assistance. He shared a GoFundMe campaign established to benefit his sister and nephews, emphasizing that contributions of any amount could alleviate their financial strain and allow the family space to mourn. He also encouraged those unable to give to share the fundraiser, as noted by The Big Lead.
At 43, Orlovsky is well-versed in the NFL from both a playing and broadcasting perspective. A University of Connecticut product, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Over his career, he amassed 3,132 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
Currently, however, football has receded into the background. Orlovsky closed his message by expressing gratitude to those supporting his sister and nephews during what he described as an incredibly painful period for his family.
