Cowboys' Christian Parker to Face Mentor Vic Fangio as Dallas Takes On Eagles

FRISCO — Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker had a reunion with a mentor last week when Mike Pettine, former head coach and defensive coordinator, joined the Cowboys as a senior defensive assistant. This time, Pettine was in a supporting role for Parker.

"It was a little bit of a role reversal," Parker said of his interactions with Pettine on Sunday in Green Bay.

On Monday, Parker will experience another unique reunion. Parker, who previously served as a defensive backs coach for the Eagles, will call defensive plays opposite Philadelphia defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Pettine gave Parker his first NFL job as a quality control assistant. Fangio, during his tenure as head coach of the Denver Broncos, provided Parker with his first positional coaching role as defensive backs coach in Denver in 2021.

Parker recalled that his interview with Fangio and the Broncos took place over video call due to COVID-19 protocols. "First time I met him he was in his office on the couch, and I was in a suit in room [over video call]," Parker said. Eventually, Parker met Fangio in person and was hired by the Broncos.

Parker worked with the Broncos from 2021 to 2023. He then followed Fangio to the Eagles, where he became Philadelphia's passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach. In his first year, the Eagles won a Super Bowl.

Parker, 34, had a reputation for being well-liked and respected in the NFL community when the Cowboys hired him away from Philadelphia this offseason to be their defensive coordinator. However, Parker said it took a while before he knew Fangio liked him. "He wasn't one to give you a warm, friendly embrace or anything like that," Parker said. "You really had to prove yourself to him. No. 1, you had to prove that you knew what you were talking about and could contribute. No. 2, that you're learning the scheme and the way he wants to do things and you work hard — because it's very serious for him."

Parker is taking a similarly serious, business-first approach to his return to Philadelphia. He said it wasn't a game he had circled on his calendar. "At the end of the day, another division opponent," Parker said. "Another task for us as a team." But it's also a chance for him and his new team to beat one of his mentors.

Key Analysis

Parker's journey from quality control assistant under Pettine to defensive coordinator under Fangio's tutelage highlights the NFL's coaching pipeline. His emphasis on proving oneself and mastering the scheme reflects Fangio's demanding style. As Parker faces his mentor, the matchup adds a layer of intrigue to the Cowboys-Eagles rivalry, though Parker remains focused on the task at hand.
