HOUSTON – The Dallas Cowboys have promoted safety Juanyeh Thomas and cornerback Reddy Steward from the practice squad for Sunday's matchup with the Houston Texans, according to Joe Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News.
For Steward, this marks his second elevation in as many weeks. The Cowboys brought him up prior to their Week 3 game against the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro after cornerback Cobie Durant was sidelined with a hamstring injury. Durant has been ruled out again for Friday and will miss his second consecutive game.
Thomas is being elevated for the first time this season. He rejoined Dallas on Wednesday when the Cowboys signed him to the practice squad, along with cornerbacks Alex Austin and Tyrek Funderburk.
The secondary has been hit hard, losing three regulars since Week 2. Safety P.J. Locke was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury sustained in the win over the Washington Commanders. Safety Jalen Thompson also went on injured reserve Wednesday due to a hamstring strain from the loss to Baltimore. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Friday that he has not seen a secondary this banged up in his 25 years of coaching.
In response, Dallas acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday night, sending a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick to Pittsburgh. Porter has no injury designation.
Thomas originally signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech in 2022 and appeared in 36 games for the Cowboys from 2023 through 2025, recording 53 tackles. He also returned a punt 43 yards for a touchdown in 2024. Thomas signed with the Indianapolis Colts on March 16 before returning to Dallas this week.
Steward joined Dallas via a waiver claim from the Minnesota Vikings in August 2025. He played in all 17 games last season with five starts, primarily at slot cornerback, and recorded 1.5 sacks.
Houston made a move involving a former Cowboy on Saturday, elevating linebacker Kenneth Murray from their practice squad, as reported by Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle. Murray, a former first-round pick, had one sack and one fumble recovery in 17 games with 16 starts for Dallas last season. The Texans ruled out linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair with a groin injury and safety M.J. Stewart with a knee injury on Friday, according to the team's final injury report.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and Durant are the only Cowboys ruled out. Kickoff at Reliant Stadium is set for noon CT Sunday on Fox.
