Cooley's Last-Second Hat Trick Lifts Mammoth Over Penguins in Overtime Thriller

PITTSBURGH -- Logan Cooley completed a hat trick against his hometown team with just one second remaining in regulation, and Mikhail Sergachev scored at 3:27 of overtime to give the Utah Mammoth a stunning 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.

After Ben Kindel put Pittsburgh ahead 3-2 with 25 seconds left, Cooley batted the puck in from the left side of the net for his sixth goal in four games and seventh of the season. The tally marked Cooley's third career hat trick and made him the third Pittsburgh native to achieve the feat against the Penguins, joining Brandon Saad and R.J. Umberger.

Cooley, who participated in Sidney Crosby's first Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program at age 5, scored for the first time in seven games against Pittsburgh. He had two first-period goals to give the Mammoth an early 2-0 lead and added his third in the third period.

In overtime, Sergachev beat Arturs Silovs off a rebound in front. Sebastian Cossa stopped 31 shots for the Mammoth, who have won three of their last five games overall. Utah is now 5-0-0 after a loss and 8-0-0 when leading after two periods.

Rickard Rakell had a short-handed goal, and Erik Karlsson also scored for Pittsburgh. Silovs made 30 saves.

The Mammoth will visit Philadelphia on Sunday, while the Penguins travel to Montreal on Saturday night.

Key Analysis

Cooley's dramatic equalizer and Sergachev's overtime heroics capped a thrilling comeback for Utah, which improved to 5-0-0 following a loss this season. The Mammoth's perfect record when leading after two periods (8-0-0) was nearly spoiled, but Cooley's last-second goal forced the extra session. Pittsburgh, which got a short-handed goal from Rakell and a late go-ahead tally from Kindel, saw its late lead slip away. The loss dropped the Penguins to 5-3-1 in games decided beyond regulation, with Silovs making 30 saves in a losing effort.
