Fifth-year quarterback Conner Weigman has been among the nation's elite at his position this college football season, but a late-game stumble against Utah and a subsequent injury report have raised questions about his health entering the final stretch.
According to Chris Baldwin of PaperCity Houston, Weigman was seen leaving Rice-Eccles Stadium in a walking boot. During the game, it was evident that Weigman experienced discomfort following a 33-yard run in the first quarter. He appeared diminished for the remainder of the contest, unable to utilize his legs effectively.
The combination of a hampered Weigman, inconsistent offensive line play, and a nonexistent run game contributed to a fourth-quarter offensive collapse. However, that single performance does not define Weigman's season, particularly through the first seven games.
Weigman's Final Statement
Weigman has thrown for 26 total touchdowns against just two interceptions, and his QBR remains among the top 10 nationally. His 26 total scores rank second in the FBS. The upcoming bye week provides an opportunity for rest and recovery before the final four regular-season games of his collegiate career.
All four remaining opponents are beatable, with two matchups on the road. A strong finish would keep Weigman's numbers among the nation's best and further solidify his status as a high-level NFL prospect. He could easily surpass 30 touchdown passes and exceed 35 total touchdowns, provided he returns from the bye week in better physical condition.
A 10-2 team record might still give Houston a slim chance at a conference championship berth. These last four games will shape how Weigman is evaluated come NFL Draft time. If he maintains the level of play he showed through Week 7, his name could still appear in the top 10 of the Heisman Trophy race.
Health is paramount. Houston's fortunes rise and fall with Weigman, who possesses accuracy, poise, and scrambling ability when fully healthy. He demonstrated that this season with a career night of five touchdown passes, 343 passing yards, and 52 rushing yards—the highlight of his year.
The remaining schedule includes road trips to Colorado and West Virginia. Performing well in those environments will be crucial.
