The Washington Commanders earned a 27-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Northwest Stadium on NBC Sunday Night Football, in a game that was far from aesthetically pleasing. The Commanders struggled early, then the Eagles demonstrated their own shortcomings, yet Washington still came out on top.
Last season, the Eagles were leading comfortably late and chose to go for a two-point conversion after a touchdown, seemingly to run up the score. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn apparently remembered that slight: when Rachaad White scored with 1:52 remaining, Quinn called for a two-point attempt, and Austin Ekeler punched it in on a run up the middle to add insult to injury.
Washington's start was disastrous, as quarterback Jayden Daniels missed several open receivers, his timing appeared off, two passes were dropped, and pre-snap penalties persisted. Consequently, the Commanders found themselves trailing 10-0 to an Eagles team that had arrived in DC riding a five-game losing streak.
After the shaky beginning, Daniels settled in. He started the night completing just 4 of 11 passes but finished with 16 completions on 29 attempts for 217 yards, one passing touchdown, and no interceptions. Daniels connected on a 53-yard strike to Treylon Burks, a 30-yarder to Antonio Williams, a 21-yard pass to Chig Okonkwo, and a 20-yard completion to Stefon Diggs.
On the ground, Washington rushed for 135 yards on 26 carries, led by Rachaad White's 55 yards on 11 attempts and Austin Ekeler's 36 yards on eight carries.
Defensively, the Commanders sacked Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee five times, with Shy Tuttle, Dorance Armstrong, K'Lavon Chaisson, Charles Omenihu, and Odafe Oweh each recording one sack. Cornerback Rasul Douglas nabbed an interception, and Omenihu recovered a McKee fumble that was forced by Armstrong.
Luke McCaffrey also made an impact with a 44-yard kickoff return and a 27-yard punt return, both in the first half. Kicker Drew Stevens made four of five field goal attempts, including a 56-yarder; his only miss came from 55 yards.
With the win, Washington moves into third place in the NFC East with a 2-4-1 record, while the Eagles drop to 2-6 and sit alone in last place. The Commanders will host the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday.
